I used DMC Baroque thread (size 10) with a #8 (1.5 mm) steel hook. I tried it with a #9 but it caused the motifs to twist. Later I tried it again with a #9 and it worked okay, so take your pick. Thanks to jacintae, lechatnoirdeux, JRAH, and chickennanna of Ravelry for testing the pattern.
Begin with a circle of six ch, joined with a slip stitch.
1. Ch 6, dc in 6-ch ring, ch 2, dc in ring. (dc, ch 2, dc = V-stitch.), The ch-6 is a top loop that will be used to attach the edging.
2. Ch 6, turn, V-stitch in V-stitch. This is the ch-6 loop that will become the scallop.
3. Ch 6, turn, V-stitch in V-stitch. This is another top loop. Don't turn. You are fixing to make the scallop. Ch 1, 5 dc in previous ch-6 loop, 2 ch, 5 dc in loop. Ch 1, sc in 6-ch ring.
4. Ch 7, turn, sc in 2-ch space. Ch 5, dc in same space, ch 5, dc in same space, ch 5, sc in same space. Ch 7, sc in single ch space after last dc. Ch 1. Sc in top of V-stitch. Ch 4, dc in same V-stitch. (The sc, ch 4, and dc make a V-stitch.)
5. Ch 6, turn. V-stitch in V-stitch.
6. Ch 6 (loop for next scallop), turn. V-stitch in V-stitch.
7. Ch 6, turn. V-stitch in V-stitch.
8, Ch 1, 5 dc in previous loop, ch 2, 5 dc in loop, ch 1, sc in side of second V-stitch from last dc.
Repeat rows 4 through 8 for length desired.
